Barry University

Barry College was founded in 1940 as a women’s catholic college and consisted of 5 buildings on the original campus in Miami Shores. In 1981, Barry College became Barry University, a private Catholic university that is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Miami. Conveniently located in a suburb north of Downtown Miami, Barry University has more than 4,000 students with a campus of 54 buildings consisting of technology laboratories and indoor and outdoor sporting facilities. While the main campus remains in Miami Shores, there are other campuses located in Orlando, Saint Petersburg and several other adult education classes located throughout Florida.

Master of Science in Clinical Psychology

Application requirements into the Master of Science in Clinical Psychology includes, but is not limited to, a written statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, a bachelor’s degree with a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 and completion of the Graduate Record Exam with scores in the 50th percentile. Acceptance to Barry University does not guarantee acceptance in the program. The program offers a 60 credit hour option that is designed for students who wish to pursue licensure as a Mental Health Counselor in Florida or doctoral study. All courses are offered as evening classes to accommodate working professionals. Students will receive supervised clinical work in a mental health setting for eight hours per week during one semester. Further, there is a 1,000 hour supervised clinical internship offered during the third year that allows further development of more advanced clinical skills. The program will prepare students to master clinical skills of evaluation, diagnosis and treatment.

Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University

College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities

Founded in 1887 as the State Normal College for Colored Students for fifteen students and two instructors, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical is rich in history and known affectionately as a premiere historically black college and university. Currently there are over 11,000 students and more than 700 faculty members at the University. Master of Science in Psychology

The Master of Science in Psychology at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University offer students a broad liberal arts background. This degree will enable students to pursue advanced degrees and prepare them for careers and for licensure in the state of Florida. Students will fulfill foreign language requirements with twelve semester credit hours of classes such as Spanish. A major in psychology consists of a minimum of 30 semester hours and include core classes such as psychopathology, individual personality testing, community psychology, developmental psychology, behavior modification, research methods, psychological statistics, measurement and evaluation, thesis and intervention techniques. The Master of Science in Psychology degree program offers education in community psychology with a black psychology and multicultural mental health emphasis. Florida International University is a public institution founded in 1965. With two main campuses located in West Miami-Dade County, the Modesto A. Master of Science in Psychology

The Master of Science in Psychology degree program prepares researchers and practitioners for a variety of clinical settings. There is a minimum of 36 credit hours with core courses is psychology with a minimum of 6 credit hours of approved graduate courses allowed to be transferred from another graduate degree program. Students have a choice of two specialization and professional training courses offered in counseling psychology and legal psychology. Counseling psychology is 60 credit hours of coursework and professional counseling training that will prepare students to take the Florida state licensing exam for mental health counseling. Legal psychology program is a dual masters and doctoral program for students who are interested in legal psychology. Admission to Florida International University does not guarantee admission to the Department of Psychology School of Integrated Science and Humanity. Students are required to meet all the admission requirements of the Psychology School, and if seeking their legal psychology dual degrees, must also meet the requirements of the College of Law.

The Masters of Science in Psychology, Specialty in Applied Behavior Analysis degree program at the Panama City Campus is one of only 14 programs that are accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International. The graduate curriculum has been approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, who certifies professionals. Nova Southeastern University

Established in 1994 with the merge of Nova University and Southeastern University of Health Sciences, Nova Southeastern University was formed as a nonprofit, independent research university. Master of General Psychology

The Masters of General Psychology degree program at Nova Southeastern University is approved by the Florida Department of Education. It has also been accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education which is awarded through the Fischler School of Education. The accreditation covers advanced educator and initial teacher preparation programs. It does not cover continued education for professional development, re-licensure or for other purposes. The Masters of General Psychology degree program will prepare students for careers as professional school counselors with the understanding of their role, function and relationships with education professionals and the community by respecting the influences of diverse multicultural family and individual backgrounds. They will gain specialized knowledge and skills to meet the needs of all individuals’ at all developmental stages. The University of Florida is the third largest university based on student population in the nation. With over 50,000 students, the university is one of 17 public, land-grant universities belonging to the Association of American Universities and is situated on a 2,000 acre campus with over 900 buildings. There are approximately 7,500 students housed in the residence hall on campus and over 1,000 married couples and graduate students residing in the five family housing villages. The University of Florida has research facilities equipped with the latest technology and a book value of more than $1 billion with a replacement value of $2 billion.

Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology

The University of Florida does not offer a terminal master’s degree in psychology although students should and often do complete a Master of Science degree as they progress towards the completion of their doctorate. Students should refer to the graduate Handbook for requirements in completing both the Masters and Doctor Degrees. Undergraduates with relevant volunteer work, work experience and coursework along with research experience, grades and standardized test scores are used for student selections for admissions into the Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology. The program is a mentor-mentee model type where students are matched to faculty members for mentorship based upon research interests and the student’s statement of intent. Students can expect twelve to fifteen semesters with nine to twelve credit units in each semester. Admission to the University of Florida does not guarantee admission to the degree programs. There are separate requirements for applying for the Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology degree program.

University of South Florida

The University of South Florida was founded in 1956 as the first independent state university developing into one of the nation’s largest leading research institutions. The institution is ranked as one of the top 50 universities for federal research expenditures. The University of South Florida is ranked 10th worldwide among universities granted U.S. patents. They are one of only four public universities in Florida to receive the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and fifth among the most veteran friendly universities. Master of Arts in Psychology

The University of South Florida does not admit students seeking a Master’s degree in Psychology as the institution expect graduate students to work towards their PhD. The program requires students to complete 30 credit hours of graduate courses in psychology and core courses required by the program area. In addition, the student is required to defend a master’s thesis consisting of original research. This program is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of College and Schools. The Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology program is broken down into three concentrations; clinical, industrial organization, and cognition, neuroscience and social psychology. Consisting of 12 credit hours with successful completion of the PhD. Comprehensive Qualifying Exam and defense of doctoral dissertation is required. Admission to the University of South Florida does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Students are required to apply for the program separately with a prerequisite of completing all Master’s degree in psychology or equivalent with a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
